A non-governmental organization, Value Re-Orientation for Community Enhancement (VARCE), based in Osogbo, Osun State, is set to graduate 96 out-of-school and teenage mothers who were part of its Girls’ Learning Hub program. The program, launched in 2023, provided quality science education and technological training to girls who dropped out of school due to financial constraints.

According to Ademola Adebisi, Executive Director of VARCE, the graduation marks a historic milestone in education and empowerment for out-of-school girls in Osun State. “86 out of 96 graduates earned a minimum of 9 credits, including Mathematics and English Language. 89 graduates obtained at least 6 distinctions in their results,” he said.

Adebisi noted that the achievement is remarkable, considering many of the girls could barely read or write when they joined the program in 2023. Beyond academics, the graduates have also been equipped with 21st-century digital skills, enabling them to code, develop applications, and design websites.

“They can now code, develop applications, and design websites, positioning them for future careers in technology and innovation,” Adebisi stated. The NGO has also secured admission for 12 of the graduating students into Adeleke University, Ede, and is exploring potential partnerships to award university scholarships

Mr. Dare Adeoye, Coordinator of the Learning Hub, said, “More than 50 of them would have married wrongly if not for this programme. Their parents don’t have the means to pay their school fees in their former schools. But now, the stories of these former out-of-school girls have changed for the better through this transformative and humanitarian programme.”

VARCE’s mission is to build youth capacity and promote social inclusion through innovative programs, ensuring sustainable community development. The organization offers various initiatives, including:

– Gender and Education (GED): Empowering girls and women through education and skills development

– Disease Prevention and Control (DPC): Promoting health and well-being in communities

– Community Development: Fostering inclusive environments for sustainable development

The VARCE Girls’ Learning Hub program is a testament to the organization’s commitment to empowering youth and promoting social inclusion. By providing access to quality education and digital skills training, VARCE is transforming the lives of young girls and women in Osun State
