According to Waziri Bulama, the former national secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), no region in Nigeria can win the presidency on its own without forming partnerships with other regions.
Bulama said the things in an Arise Television interview.
Because of Nigeria’s variety, he clarified, regional collaboration is crucial to democratic stability.
Bulama was reacting to a statement attributed to Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, who stated that the North would soon determine the distribution of votes in the area and that no politician could win the president without it.
Bulama responded by saying that no area could create a president by itself.
“Neither would a northerner win an election without the support of other parts of the country,” he said, highlighting the continued importance of regional coalitions in Nigeria’s multiethnic democracy.
He clarified that even though the late Muhammadu Buhari received almost 12 million votes consistently over the course of three elections, he was unable to win until he forged partnerships with other areas.
“So it was an ideological movement that connected with citizens across the country, not just in the North but all over,” he said.
He clarified that members of political parties are supposed to renounce their local identities—such as tribe, location, or religion—in favor of the party’s shared ideals and objectives.
