On Tuesday, Congress in Peru voted to impeach interim President Jose Jeri. This decision exacerbates the nation’s ongoing political instability and represents the seventh ousting of a Peruvian head of state since 2016.

Jeri, who took office in October 2025 at the age of 39, was ousted over claims of irregularities in government appointments and suspected corruption involving a Chinese businessman.

Recently, prosecutors initiated an investigation to find out “if the head of state exerted inappropriate influence” over hiring decisions in the public sector.

The leader, who is facing challenges, has rejected all accusations.

Jeri succeeded Dina Boluarte, the former president who was also impeached due to widespread protests, allegations of corruption, and escalating insecurity linked to organized crime.

At that time, Jeri was the head of Peru’s unicameral Congress and was constitutionally designated to finish Boluarte’s term, which concludes in July. He was prohibited from running in the presidential election set for April 12.

The impeachment is based on allegations, initially disclosed by the investigative TV show Cuarto Poder, that a number of women were inappropriately appointed to roles in the president’s office and the environment ministry after meeting with Jeri. Although initial reports mentioned five appointments, prosecutors indicated that nine cases are being reviewed.

Moreover, Jeri is under investigation for an alleged undisclosed meeting with a Chinese businessman reported to have commercial interests connected to the Peruvian government.

Jeri’s ousting occurs merely weeks ahead of national elections, where over 30 candidates – a record number – are competing for the presidency.

Certain analysts have proposed that the timing of the impeachment may have been affected by political maneuvering.

Rafael Lopez Aliaga, head of the right-wing Popular Renewal party and a leading candidate in opinion polls, is among those who publicly demanded Jeri’s resignation.

In accordance with constitutional provisions, Congress is expected to elect a new parliamentary leader, who will automatically take on the role of interim president until July.

Political analyst Augusto Alvarez characterized the transition as potentially problematic, cautioning that it “will be difficult to find a replacement with political legitimacy” in a legislature facing allegations of inefficiency and corruption.

The latest leadership change in Peru highlights a decade-long trend of ongoing institutional instability. Since 2016, several presidents have faced impeachment, investigation, or conviction due to corruption-related charges.

The nation is grappling with a rise in violent crime, especially extortion aimed at those who operate public transport.

Official statistics indicate that reported extortion cases skyrocketed from 2,396 to over 25,000 in 2025, mirroring deteriorating security worries.
