On Tuesday night, heavily armed gunmen believed to be Fulani bandits invaded the Rim community in the Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, resulting in the deaths of two residents and injuries to several others.
Villagers, who verified the assault to journalists on Wednesday morning, reported that the assailants invaded the village around 10:30 pm, after everyone had gone to bed, and fired their weapons at intervals for more than half an hour before escaping into nearby foliage and rocky areas, eluding security forces’ response.
Dusu Bulus, a villager, commented on the assault, describing it as unprovoked and surprising to the community, as there had been no previous events that would justify the bandits’ retaliation.
Rwang Tengwong, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Movement (BYM), also confirmed the invasion, stating to newsmen that the sudden attack had thrown the community into panic.
“Gunmen stormed Rim Village around 10pm on Tuesday night and opened fire sporadically. As of now, two people have been confirmed killed while two others sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital,” Tengwong said.
Tengwong characterized the assault as a “sad episode in the recurring insecurity plaguing parts of Riyom and other communities in the state” and urged security forces to increase patrols and ensure that those responsible are punished.
SP Alfred Alabo, the spokesperson for the Plateau Police command, and the spokesperson for Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) could not be reached for comments despite attempts. Calls and text messages to their phones went unanswered.
