The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed allegations that Nigeria is heading toward a one-party state, insisting that the country remains a robust multi-party democracy.

The party’s National Secretary, Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, made this assertion on Wednesday during a media chat on Arise TV.

“According to recent estimates, Nigeria’s population stands at about 200 million, with the APC holding the largest share in any political organization. Therefore, when discussing the collective voice of Nigerians, you cannot rely on what I refer to as a cacophony of individuals speaking out of emotion without solid facts. As a government, we must uphold democratic institutions, and no one should undermine democracy or the judiciary without presenting concrete evidence,” Basiru said.

He pointed out that one of the core pillars of democracy is the diversity of ideas and the ability for citizens to express themselves freely.

“Today, Nigeria enjoys a dynamic and independent media landscape. Every day, there are editorials and talk shows critiquing the government. This clearly demonstrates that freedom of speech, association, and organization are alive and well in Nigeria,” Basiru emphasized.

Basiru further noted that Nigeria is home to 19 registered political parties, arguing that this fact alone contradicts claims of one-party dominance.

“Currently, Nigeria has at least 19 registered political parties. The groups making these claims represent fewer than five parties. So, there is no basis for the claim that Nigeria has become a one-party state,” he added.

He stressed that the APC remains committed to enhancing its organizational structure and broadening its grassroots support across the nation, without being diverted by what he called unnecessary political rhetoric.

“The APC’s mission is clear. We aim to build a truly nationwide political party that connects with the grassroots and can effectively communicate policies and programs aligned with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda. We will not be sidetracked by those whose complaints are based on sentiments rather than facts,” Basiru concluded.
