Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga has rejected reports claiming that President Bola Tinubu vowed not to seek a second term if he failed to improve electricity supply across the country.

Onanuga made the clarification during an interview on Arise News, insisting that remarks made by Tinubu during the 2022 election campaign had been misinterpreted.

According to him, the President’s comments regarding electricity were conditional and should not be viewed as a direct promise to abandon his re-election ambition.

The presidential aide stated that Tinubu has shown commitment to revamping the power sector since taking office, pointing to the implementation of the Electricity Act, which grants states the authority to generate, transmit and distribute electricity independently.

He also highlighted government initiatives aimed at addressing estimated billing through the distribution of additional electricity meters and other measures designed to improve service delivery.

While acknowledging that the electricity sector has not yet achieved the level of improvement anticipated by the administration, Onanuga attributed the challenges to longstanding problems within the sector.

He identified gas supply shortages, inherited debts owed to gas suppliers and the country’s ageing transmission infrastructure as some of the major obstacles affecting power delivery.

The presidential spokesman maintained that the Federal Government remains committed to resolving these issues and improving electricity generation and distribution nationwide.
