President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has stated that the National Assembly exists to serve Nigerians and not to exclude citizens from the democratic process.

Akpabio made the remark on Tuesday while declaring open the National Assembly Open Week in Abuja, stressing that the legislature belongs to the Nigerian people whose votes brought it into existence.

According to him, Parliament is not the exclusive preserve of elected lawmakers but belongs to millions of Nigerians whose mandate and expectations give the institution its legitimacy and purpose.

He emphasised that the National Assembly was established to encourage greater public involvement in governance.

“Parliament was never built to keep the people out. It was built to bring them in, for democracy flourishes only in the confidence of an informed and engaged citizenry.”

Akpabio explained that the Open Week initiative was introduced to help Nigerians better understand the activities of the legislature while strengthening public trust in democratic institutions.

He noted that the programme would provide citizens with an opportunity to look beyond media headlines and appreciate Parliament as an institution where the hopes and aspirations of Nigerians are translated into legislation and governance.

The Senate President also encouraged Nigerians to engage more actively with their elected representatives.

According to him, constructive criticism and meaningful public participation are essential to making Parliament more responsive and effective.

Akpabio further stated that Parliament exists to ensure every Nigerian, irrespective of location or the size of their community, has a voice and enjoys fair representation within the country’s democratic system.
