The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, or NNPCL, extended an open invitation to tour the recently reopened Port Harcourt and Warri Refineries, which former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called insulting.

Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo’s spokeswoman, said this on Friday.

According to ZINGTIE, the former president was called to the renovated facilities by the NNPCL after he claimed that the state-owned oil company had turned down Aliko Dangote’s $750 million offer to run the refineries in Port Harcourt and Kaduna.

NNPCL was criticised by Obasanjo for turning down Dangote’s offer in spite of its incapacity to oversee the plants.

But in response to the invitation from NNPCL to visit the resurrected Port Harcourt and Warri Refineries, Obasanjo claimed that the invitation’s format was blatantly disrespectful to his position as former Nigerian president.

He said that NNPCL had not thought it appropriate to send him a formal invitation to the tour in question.

“Is that the right way to invite a former president of the country? Who says Baba has even seen the statement or read the news? It is a total disrespect for the office of the former president.

“Ask the NNPCL that as of January 2, have they written to him? Is there any official letter addressed to him, inviting him to the refinery?

“It is an absolute insult, and the former president cannot dignify such with a response,” Obasanjo’s aide stated.

As of the time this article was filed, Olufemi Soneye, the NNPCL spokeswoman, has not responded to the former president’s most recent response.
