Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria has denied involvement in the development of a nuclear weapon for Nigeria.

Malam Auwalu Umar, Director of Public Affairs of the university, issued a statement refuting the charges on Saturday in Zaria.

Umar described the video in which the allegation was made as AI-generated, and claimed it was intended to misinform the public about Nigeria’s peaceful nuclear energy effort.

According to him, the film incorrectly stated that in the 1980s, Nigerian scientists secretly enriched weapons-grade uranium in Kaduna and that ABU researchers got centrifugal equipment from Pakistan’s AQ Khan network.

The institution’s spokesperson further stated that the information was baseless, unfounded, and unconfirmed.

He noted that most ABU at the Centre for Energy Research and Training, CERT, were still training abroad in the 1980s and could not have participated in uranium enrichment.

“Nigeria’s first nuclear reactor (NIRR-1) was established much later in 1996 under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Technical Cooperation Programme and commissioned in 2004,” he said.
