Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s flag bearer in the 2023 presidential election, has strongly criticized the proposed salary increase for public office holders.
Reports indicate that the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has suggested raising the remuneration of political leaders.
In a statement shared on his official X account, Obi questioned both the rationale and the timing of such a proposal.
He argued that putting forward such an idea while citizens face declining living conditions reflects not only a lack of empathy but also reveals the selfishness of those in power.
According to the former Governor of Anambra State, the initiative amounts to a blatant effort to take more from the system at the expense of the vast majority of Nigerians who are already grappling with economic hardship.
He went on to call on the RMAFC to shift its focus to improving the welfare of ordinary Nigerians, particularly public sector workers who, he noted, have suffered prolonged neglect.
“The RMAFC’s reckless haste in prioritising the greed of politicians over the desperate needs of the masses is not only provocative but scandalous.
“The proposed over 100% salary increase for political office holders is totally unjustifiable considering the economic realities facing our country.
“We believe that political office is a service to the nation, and not a means to accumulate wealth.
“It is very disturbing that the RMAFC is prioritising the welfare of political office holders over that of security personnel, particularly police officers who are grossly underpaid and overworked,” he wrote.
