Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, a former presidential adviser and a mainstay of the All Progressives Congress, or APC, the country’s ruling party, has said that accepting defectors from other opposition parties—particularly the PDP—at random is a very expensive mistake.
Defectors to the APC have been flooding in over the past few months.
Obono-Obla said in a statement that the newcomers, who were never based on the basic principles that established the APC, were the ones who had arrived and would continue to cause problems within the party.
“These same latecomers stand at the forefront of efforts to fracture the party.
“Their maneuvers, though unsuccessful thus far, underscore a deeper identity crisis within the APC.
“Since assuming power in 2015, the APC has made the costly mistake of embracing every Tom, Dick, and Harry, often at the expense of its founding ideals.
“In doing so, the party has sidelined loyal foundation members who sacrificed immensely to merge the legacy parties in 2013.
“These individuals, lacking the ideological grounding and battle-worn experience of the legacy party stalwarts, infiltrated the APC following its rise to power,” he stated.
Obono-Obla also discussed the plans of former Kaduna State Governor El-rufai and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to register a new party named the All Democratic Alliance, ADA.
He claimed that a closer examination of the ADA’s promoters revealed that they were those who joined the APC between 2014 and 2019, long after the foundational elements of the party had been established.
