After 11 years, MultiChoice to shut down Showmax streaming service

After over ten years of operation, MultiChoice, the parent company of DStv and GOtv, has announced plans to close its streaming service Showmax.

In a March 5 message to customers, the company indicated that the decision follows a strategic review designed to bolster its overall digital offerings and ensure long-term sustainability in the face of increasing competition in the streaming sector.

Showmax, which started in South Africa in 2015, has expanded over the years to cater to audiences in various African countries.

Although MultiChoice has yet to confirm a specific shutdown date, it assures subscribers that the service will continue to operate for the time being and that no immediate action is necessary.

Parts of the message read: “Following a comprehensive review, the Showmax Board has taken the decision to discontinue the Showmax service in the near future.

“We understand that this news may raise questions. Showmax subscribers are a priority for us, and we are working on plans to ensure clear communication and a smooth transition when the time comes.”

Additionally, the company committed to providing detailed information regarding timelines and the transition process well in advance of the closure.

“Streaming remains central to our strategy. We will continue to invest in premium content, technology innovation and partnerships to deliver the best possible entertainment experience to our customers,” it added.

The announcement follows closely on the heels of the approval of Canal+’s acquisition of MultiChoice, but the company has not yet offered details about potential effects on employees or alternatives for current Showmax users.
