Ayomide Olayemi was given a 10-year prison sentence by an Ikeja High Court on Monday for stealing a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member and an artisan of their possessions.

Olayemi had entered a guilty plea to a two-count amended charge of stealing and attempted felony.

He was sentenced by Justice Modupe Nicol-Clay after reaching a plea deal.

Based on the suggested 10-year prison sentence outlined in the plea bargain agreement, the judge rendered the decision.

According to Nicol-Clay’s ruling, the court was convinced that the convicted individual had voluntarily accepted the plea bargain and was aware of the consequences of entering a guilty plea.

She said: “This court finds the agreed punishment of 10 years to be adequate in view of the convict’s admission of guilt and show of remorse.

“Ayomide Olayemi is hereby convicted for the offence of attempt to commit felony and stealing.

“He is hereby sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.

“The sentence shall commence from the date of his remand, being Jan. 3, 2019.”

The convicted person was originally arraigned on November 14, 2019, and at first entered a not guilty plea, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The convict subsequently altered his plea and engaged into a plea deal, according to NAN.

The State Counsel, Mrs. Titilayo Olanrewaju-Daud, had previously informed the court that the offender had committed the offences at the Surulere/Ojuelegba axis in Lagos on December 31, 2018, at approximately 12:00 p.m.

According to the Lagos State Government, the offender took N2,050, a Samsung C5 gold smartphone, a driver’s license, four automated teller machine cards, and a NYSC identification card.

The stolen goods belonged to Mr. Adekanmbi Olubusayo, a member of the NYSC, and Mr. Hunwanu Adebayo, an artisan.

The prosecution claims that the offences violate Sections 406(1) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, as well as Section 76(6) of the Administration of Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
