The wife of Sokoto State Governor, Hajiya Fatima Aliyu, on Thursday launched the disbursement of cash support to 41,821 female students under the *Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment* (AGILE) project.
The programme, a Conditional Cash Transfer scheme, is designed to advance girl-child education by easing financial burdens that often hinder learning. Aliyu said the initiative would help girls overcome economic challenges and remain in school. “I am pleased to learn that the AGILE project is significantly contributing to reducing the burden of out-of-school children in our communities by increasing secondary school enrolment among adolescent girls in Nigeria. It is on the strength of the impact of the project that more states are benefiting from education support. By educating girls, AGILE is helping to build a more just and prosperous society,” she stated.
Aliyu urged beneficiaries and their families to use the funds judiciously, stressing that the money should support school attendance and academic focus.
The National Coordinator of AGILE, Ms Fatima Buba-Haruna, described the Conditional Cash Transfer as a key strategy to boost enrolment, retention, and transition of girls in public secondary schools. “The success of AGILE also reaffirms the commitment of the administration of President Bola Tinubu, under the Renewed Hope Agenda, to focus on education as an essential pillar of development by providing unhindered access to quality education for every Nigerian child,” she said. She added that the project celebrates empowerment, talent, creativity, and excellence while expanding its reach to more states.
Programme Coordinator Dr. Mansur Isa-Buhari highlighted the project’s achievements: “Our mission is not just to get children into school but to ensure they learn, grow, and thrive in safe, inclusive, and stimulating environments.” He revealed that 749 classrooms had been renovated, 11,221 desks provided, 214 solar-powered boreholes installed, 1,652 toilet facilities built, 4,480 trees planted, and 11,325 adolescent girls enrolled in safe space activities. In addition, 97,446 teaching materials were distributed, and 2,240 School-Based Management Committee members were trained.
Isa-Buhari praised Governor Ahmad Aliyu’s support and noted that about 200,000 girls are expected to benefit before the project concludes. Parents in attendance hailed AGILE as a beacon of hope, pledging community support.
In a similar effort, Kogi State recently distributed ₦40,000 cash grants to 13,359 schoolgirls under the AGILE project. Speaking at the flag-off in July, project coordinator Ahmed Oricha said, “The project would provide a cash grant of N40,000 each to 13,359 adolescent girls in transition classes across the state to dismantle financial and socio-cultural barriers preventing girls from attending school.” Beneficiaries received preloaded ATM cards to ensure smooth
