Ahead Of 2027 General Elections, INEC makes special request to the FG

Ahead of the general elections in 2027, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is requesting additional funding from the Federal Government.

Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the commission, made this revelation on Friday when he appeared before the Joint Committee on Electoral Matters at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja to defend the commission’s proposed budget for 2025.

Prof. Yakubu clarified why INEC needs more money to assist important areas of its operations.

The Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, off-cycle election logistics, replacing damaged election supplies like ballot boxes, voting cubicles, and Bimodal Voter Accreditation Systems (BVAS), and fixing INEC offices in Local Government Areas are among the areas he listed as requiring funding.

In order to maintain smooth operations, he emphasised the significance of getting funding on time and said that 2025 is a critical year for preparing for the 2027 General Elections.

INEC is still committed to maintaining Nigerian democracy and bolstering the electoral process.

This comes after the commission previously stated that it had no plans to burn the more than six million Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) that had not been collected since the 2015 voter registration. “The report is inaccurate,” it stated, adding that it never considered destroying uncollected PVCs.
