Daniel Bwala, one of the presidential spokespersons, has taken aim at Farouq Kperogi, a journalism professor at Kennesaw State University in the United States, over a controversial claim involving Aisha Buhari.

Kperogi had alleged in a social media post—citing unnamed “inside sources”—that Aisha Buhari had separated from her late husband before his passing. The claim has since been refuted.

In a post shared on his official X account on Tuesday, Bwala strongly criticized the claim, calling it a reflection of “lies, blackmail and fake news” that he believes are becoming all too common in today’s media landscape.

He went on to accuse Kperogi of promoting false information under the appearance of journalism, while lacking credible training or evidence to support the story.

Bwala also pointed out that digital platforms have given ordinary citizens the tools to recognize and call out disinformation.

He concluded by encouraging Nigerians not to fall prey to manipulation or intimidation by individuals who misuse the title of journalist.

“Don’t let anybody hide under the pretext of journalism to blackmail you,” Bwala said, adding that there was “nothing new under the heavens.”
