Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has identified the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as a major potential threat to the credibility of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Yesufu expressed her concerns in a post published on her verified X handle on Thursday, warning that the electoral body could undermine the forthcoming polls.
She argued that the commission’s independence must be reflected in its actions to ensure that Nigerians have access to free, fair and credible elections.
Her comments come amid discussions surrounding INEC’s proposal to deploy artificial intelligence in the collation of election results.
According to the activist, the commission would help guarantee credible elections if it fully upheld the independence represented by the letter ‘I’ in its acronym.
“INEC is the threat to the 2027 election.
When INEC takes seriously the independence in the I in their acronym, free, fair and credible election will be a done deal.
“AI-generated content, and manipulated information pose growing threats to the credibility of the 2027 polls,” she said.
Yesufu’s warning comes as political parties and electoral authorities intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, when Nigerians will elect their next set of leaders.
