Ajuji Ahmed’s New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has denied assertions made by Agbo Major’s group that the court reinstated it.

Ahmed’s camp, which supports Rabiu Kwankwaso, the 2023 presidential contender, maintains that Major’s group, which supports the party’s founder Boniface Aniebonam, is not validated by the court decision.

Ahmed and 20 other people filed a lawsuit contesting Major’s faction’s validity, which lies at the heart of the conflict.

The claimants claimed they had been expelled for “anti-party activities” and attempted to have the convention that chose Major as the factional leader and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) revoked.

However, an Abuja High Court dismissed the case on Thursday, stating that it lacked jurisdiction. The court decided that, unless they are about candidate nominations, disagreements over party leadership are not subject to judicial intervention.

The defendant’s attorney, Segun Fiki, read the decision as a confirmation of Major’s leadership under Aniebonam.

However, Ahmed’s organization explained in a statement issued by spokesperson Ladipo Johnson that the court neither validated the leadership of Major’s group nor reinstated it.

Johnson underlined that the court refused to address the merits of the issue, stating that Major’s group is still barred from the party and that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has yet to acknowledge their acts.

Citing constitutional and electoral laws that require political parties to register their NWC members with the commission, he went on to say that INEC formally acknowledges Ahmed’s side as the rightful leadership.

Johnson also advised Major’s side to refrain from disseminating false information on the court’s ruling, arguing that INEC only recognizes Ahmed’s faction’s leadership as legitimate.
