The Yale School of Nursing (YSN) has received a significant donation of $7.7 million from alumna Susanna Peyton (’83 M.S.N.) and Yale alumnus John Campbell (’80 M.A., ’84 Ph.D.). This gift, the second-largest in the school’s history, will support education and training for healthcare professionals working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

The donation will bolster the Strength Fund, an endowment established by the couple to equip advanced practice nurses and midwifery students with the specialised skills and understanding necessary to care for this population. Peyton’s experience working in a group home for people with IDD after college sparked her interest in the field, and her subsequent master’s program at YSN further deepened her commitment

The couple’s personal connection to the cause was strengthened after their child was born with Down syndrome. “We are grateful for the generosity, commitment, and vision of Susanna and John, who partnered with YSN to provide the support to develop this unique, high-impact programme,” said YSN Dean Azita Emami.

The gift will enable the development of an innovative curriculum that incorporates knowledge from multiple disciplines, community organisations, and input from those directly affected. Emami noted that this programme promises to “transform health care for countless people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
