Cornell University has announced a $100 million commitment from alumnus David A. Duffield (’62, MBA ’64) to expand the engineering college’s Duffield Hall and create a new home for the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. This historic gift is the largest in Cornell Engineering history.

The expansion project will transform Duffield Hall, incorporating the space currently occupied by Phillips Hall, which has housed the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Construction is set to begin this year and is expected to be completed by 2027.

Upon completion, the project will provide over 130,000 square feet of new and renovated space. This will include state-of-the-art teaching, research, collaboration, and maker spaces. A cutting-edge, low-vibration, “quantum-ready” research wing will also be established to support advancements in quantum computing. Additional lab space will be created to facilitate research in AI, robotics, and semiconductor materials and devices.

David A. Duffield and his wife, Cheryl, are long-time supporters of Cornell University. Their previous contributions have supported the construction of Duffield Hall, completed in 2004, as well as the establishment of the Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program and the Duffield Institute for Animal Behaviour.
