Amnesty International has denounced the recent lethal assaults in Maiduguri as brutal and illegal, urging an instant halt to the murder of non-combatants.
The rights organization stated in a post on its official X account that the coordinated assaults executed by Boko Haram demonstrated a despicable disregard for human life.
As stated by Amnesty, the assaults that took place on Monday night are said to have resulted in at least 12 fatalities and over 50 injuries.
According to Amnesty, the events occurred around 6:30 p.m. when suicide bombers set off explosives at crucial sites in the city, such as the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the Monday Market, and the Post Office area—one of Maiduguri’s busiest locations.
“These deplorable attacks took place at a time when Muslims were breaking their fast during the holy month of Ramadan and demonstrate complete disregard for human life,” the organisation said.
The group observed that the attacks are indicative of a troubling trend, claiming that Boko Haram has intensified its assaults on civilians since January 2026, including attacks on villages and the kidnapping of women and girls.
In light of this, Amnesty urged the insurgent group to cease its attacks on non-combatants.
“Boko Haram must end its campaign of vicious and unlawful killings of civilians,” it said.
The organisation also called on Nigerian authorities to take immediate action to safeguard individuals.
The group emphasized that additional measures must be taken to avert further attacks.
“The Nigerian authorities must act swiftly and ensure that all civilians are protected,” the statement added.
