There is chaos in the opposition party, according to Kenneth Okonkwo, a former spokesperson for the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential campaign team in the 2023 election.

Speaking in an interview on Channels TV, the actor-turned-politician criticized the authority of National Chairman Julius Abure and claimed the party is currently operating without leaders.

According to ZINGTIE, Abure was fired by party officials, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti, due to some internal conflicts.

On October 8, 2024, however, the Federal High Court in Abuja reinstated him as the party’s leader.

The 2024 Labour Party national convention in Nnewi, which re-elected Abure, was deemed legitimate by the court.

The court’s decision that the convention complied with all Nigerian regulations led to further division within the party.

Okonkwo resigned from the party on Tuesday due to the ongoing leadership conflict.

The Nollywood star explained his choice to Channels TV, saying that “anarchy has arrived at the Labour Party. Like I always say, anarchy is the absence of authority or non-recognition of authority.

“Currently in the Labour Party, there is no authority that is governing the party. I don’t think I have read anywhere that courts say Abure is the authentic chairman of LP.

“All the courts they went to.. because they knew that there was no convention so they always avoided the issue of convention. They will come to court and say ‘court, we need to have our agents in Ondo, you have to give us power. Give us an order to field our agents under the leadership of Abure’.

“That is the tricking and cunning way they have been going about the issue of leadership in the Labour Party.”
