Democratic U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen stated on Wednesday that authorities in El Salvador refused him access to Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran man who was mistakenly deported and is currently being held in a notorious prison in the country.
Van Hollen, who arrived in El Salvador on Wednesday to meet with senior officials and advocate for Abrego Garcia’s release, was informed by El Salvador’s Vice President, Felix Ulloa, that he could not facilitate a visit or call with Abrego Garcia.
Van Hollen, a member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, shared that Ulloa explained the decision not to release Abrego Garcia was due to the United States funding his continued detention.
“Why should the government of the United States pay the government of El Salvador to lock up a man who was illegally abducted from the United States and committed no crime,” Van Hollen queried.
As of the time of this report, the government of El Salvador has yet to comment on Senator Van Hollen’s visit.
Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt criticized the Democratic senator, suggesting that he might be using taxpayer funds to push for the release of a deported illegal immigrant who is reportedly linked to the MS-13 gang.
“It’s appalling and sad that Senator Van Hollen and the Democrats applauding his trip to El Salvador today are incapable of having any shred of common sense or empathy for their own constituents and our citizens,” she said.
The U.S. Supreme Court has ordered the Trump administration to facilitate the return of Abrego Garcia, after it was acknowledged that his deportation resulted from an administrative error.
In a meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday, El Salvador’s President, Nayib Bukele, stated that he had no intentions of returning Abrego Garcia.
At the same time, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) clarified that it does not have the authority to bring Abrego Garcia back to the United States.
