Listeners who phoned into FAD FM Calabar voiced strong disapproval over statements made by the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State, Barrister Alphonsus Eba, during a recent live interview.
The early morning show focused on party defections and the country’s worsening economic conditions. However, many listeners felt Eba’s responses came across as dismissive and detached from the daily hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians.
When asked about rising inflation, food insecurity, and the general hardship being experienced under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, Eba rejected the notion that the country was in crisis.
He claimed that Nigerians were not struggling with basic needs such as food or fuel and stated that he had not witnessed anyone foraging through garbage for sustenance.
Defending the removal of the fuel subsidy by the current administration, Eba argued that the decision was essential to preventing an economic collapse.
Responding to concerns about fuel prices surging from about N200 to nearly N1,000 since Tinubu assumed office, Eba said the public should commend the President for making tough decisions and maintained that the government was actively working to restore economic growth and stability.
His remarks drew sharp criticism from listeners, who called into the program to express their frustration. Many described his comments as “arrogant” and “insensitive.”
One caller, Timothy Abang, said, “Eba’s responses and general attitude reveal the height of insensitivity from our political leaders. For him to claim Nigerians are not experiencing hardship shows he is more interested in appeasing those in power than addressing the truth.”

Callers also criticized Eba’s demeanor during the interview, accusing him of being argumentative and disrespectful toward the program’s hosts. Several noted that he frequently interrupted the moderators and attempted to steer the conversation in favor of the APC, listing what he called the achievements of President Tinubu and Governor Bassey Otu.
Addressing his recent appointment as Chairman of the Governing Board of the Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria (RRIN), Eba said his background as a large-scale farmer made him a fitting candidate for the position. He explained that his agricultural experience influenced the federal government’s decision to appoint him, even as he continues to serve as APC state chairman.
