The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly condemned recent comments made by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, suggesting that President Bola Tinubu is seeking to establish a “life presidency.”

In a statement released on Monday, the party’s spokesperson, Mogaji Seye Oladejo, labeled El-Rufai’s remarks as irresponsible, misleading, and a direct insult to Tinubu’s decades-long dedication to democratic governance.

Oladejo highlighted President Tinubu’s pivotal contributions to Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle in the 1990s, particularly through his involvement with the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).

He emphasized that Tinubu consistently stood against military rule, often at significant personal cost, and worked tirelessly for the reinstatement of democratic governance in the country.

Describing El-Rufai’s accusations as “both ridiculous and disgraceful,” Oladejo said it was ironic that anyone especially someone of El-Rufai’s stature would question Tinubu’s democratic legacy, given his well-known stance against tenure extension and his firm defence of constitutional norms.

The Lagos APC reiterated that President Tinubu remains firmly committed to upholding Nigeria’s Constitution. The party also noted that the country’s democratic system is safeguarded by term limits, strong institutions, and an effective system of checks and balances.
