Salihu Lukman, a former National Vice Chairman (North-West) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), claims that the ruling party is progressively shifting away from its original progressive principles and toward a structure more akin to centralized control.
Lukman criticized the decision to forgo internal competitions in favor of automatic adoptions during his appearance on Channels Television’s breakfast show, The Morning Brief, on Friday.
As he considered his position in the APC’s establishment, the former APC chieftain expressed his disapproval of the party’s current course, saying it had strayed from its original principles.
“The APC has moved from a party envisioned to be progressive to almost a monarchy. As it is now, the APC mantra is that there will be no internal contest in 2027 — the President is adopted. All their governors are adopted. Legislators are also adopted,” he said.
He asserts that none of Nigeria’s political parties operate as legitimate parties in the traditional sense and that political organizations that violate their constitutions or don’t have regular internal meetings aren’t legitimate parties.
“Any party whose elected representatives are not accountable is not a party in the classical sense,” he said.
However, the former APC National Vice Chairman (Northwest) revealed that talks were nearing completion for a new opposition coalition before the 2027 elections.
Lukman added that talks to create a workable platform that might overthrow the current political system had been going on for more than a year.
Lukman said the coalition plans to either create a new political party or change an existing one in order to run in the general elections in 2027.
Speaking about the reasoning for the coalition attempt, Lukman clarified that the lack of legitimate political parties was the primary issue confronting Nigeria’s democracy.
However, he pointed out that current efforts are concentrated on negotiating with an existing party in order to change its ideology and structure.
The former APC leader clarified that the coalition’s demands include a total overhaul of the leadership, constitutional changes, and a new internal culture in which candidates are chosen through open elections.
