Before Osun State’s 2026 governorship election, former governor Rauf Aregbesola has categorically denied that his party, the Omoluabi Progressives, will ever create a coalition with other political parties or persons.

Aregbesola said this at a reception held in Osogbo on Sunday to celebrate his 68th birthday, which was hosted by the Omoluabi Progressives.

The Omoluabi Progressives is a political organisation he created following his term as governor.

Aregbesola, who spoke to the crowd and was upbeat about the group’s chances in the upcoming election, said, “By this time next year, we will all be close to Abere (Osun Governor’s Office). May God make it so.”

Rumors of a potential cooperation with other political actors or groupings were rejected by the former interior minister.

Aregbesola went on to say that his group is prepared to run for and win the next election on its own.

“So, people are having untrue impression that we will align with anyone (in the governorship poll). We are not going to align with anyone. We are going to pursue our political interests separately.

“No alliance with anyone or group. By the grace of God, this group will win. We will contest and we will win,” he declared.

The former governor also paused to consider the importance of mothers’ day and the personal meaning of birthdays.

“Whenever you are celebrating birthday, during the celebration, always remember to pray for your mother. The pains they endure during childbirth is enormous,” he said.

Aregbesola while thanking the event organizers, stated, “I am happy for this honour. I pray for you all, may you continue to succeed in all your endeavours.”

In his remarks, Moshood Adeoti, who was the Secretary to the Osun State Government under Aregbesola, asked Omoluabi Progressives members to continue to be firm in their adherence to the organization’s values.

Biyi Odunlade, who represented the current governor of Osun State, praised Aregbesola for his contributions to the state’s governance.

“I celebrate you because you left a good template for good governance in Osun State that cannot be faulted by anybody,” Odunlade remarked.

“Your legacy of service is exemplary and remarkable, one that stands you out among your contemporaries,” he added.
