Armenia begins process to join European Union

Armenia has officially begun the process of applying for European Union membership, according to an announcement from the presidential press service.

On April 4, Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan signed a law reflecting the “aspirations of citizens.”

The process was initiated after Armenia’s parliament passed a bill on March 26, titled “Starting the process of accession of the Republic of Armenia to the European Union.”

The bill was introduced following a civil petition that gathered 60,000 signatures and was supported by 64 lawmakers, with seven opposing the motion.

Russia had previously warned that no country can be a member of both the EU and the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated, “Being members of two different organizations, hypothetically speaking, is simply impossible.”

The EAEU, founded in 2015, includes Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, and Kyrgyzstan, all of which were former Soviet states.

Armenia’s decision to seek EU membership follows a recent peace agreement with Azerbaijan, bringing an end to nearly four decades of conflict. In March 2023, the European Parliament called for strengthening ties with Armenia after the country met the Maastricht Treaty’s criteria to apply for EU membership.
