Real Madrid Women secured a 2-0 victory in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Arsenal.

The Spanish team triumphed in difficult conditions at the Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium, with heavy rain in Madrid leaving the pitch in poor shape. The soggy surface made it hard for Arsenal to execute their usual passing style, as they struggled with the slower conditions.

Linda Caicedo opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with Real Madrid’s first shot of the match, finishing a counter-attack.

As Arsenal pressed for an equaliser, Real Madrid extended their lead when substitute Athenea del Castillo’s shot from the edge of the box went past goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger.

The return leg is scheduled for next Wednesday at the Emirates.
