Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi is taking steps to enhance the capacity of its students to harness engineering and technology for a sustainable society and inclusive economy.

According to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibrahim Garba, this initiative is part of the university’s efforts to empower its students to solve societal problems through impactful research.

The university has collaborated with the UK-Higher Education Partnership for Sub-Saharan Africa (HEPSSA) project and the Royal Academy of Engineering Education (RAEng) to organize a capacity-building workshop for engineering students. Prof. Suleiman Dodo, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Engineering Technology, represented the VC at the inauguration of the workshop.

Prof. Robinson Ejilah, University Project Lead, RAEng–HEPSSA, explained that the program aims to develop engineers equipped with skills to meet local and global challenges. The workshop is designed to ignite participants’ passion for research, sharpen their critical thinking skills, and foster a powerful network of peers and mentors.

As Ejilah noted, “This workshop will also provide a unique platform for the engineering students to deepen their understanding of research methodologies and encompassing areas such as research design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation.” He emphasized the importance of developing effective scientific writing and communication skills to disseminate research findings.

The workshop features a distinguished panel of speakers, including academics, industry leaders, and researchers. Their presentations aim to enrich participants’ understanding of key research concepts and inspire innovative and impactful research endeavors. Ultimately, the program seeks to empower the next generation of engineers, cultivate a research ecosystem, and bridge the gap between academia and industry through collaborative research.

As Prof. Ejilah further explained, “Research serves as the cornerstone of our broader vision to empower the next generation of engineers, cultivate a research ecosystem within Nigerian universities, and breach the gap between academia and industry by fostering a culture of innovation, curiosity, and collaborative research.”

The workshop is expected to have a lasting impact on the participants, equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to drive innovation and growth in the engineering sector. With the support of international partners like RAEng and HEPSSA, ATBU is poised to play a leading role in shaping the future of engineering education in Nigeria.
