The governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, has received praise from former vice president Atiku Abubakar for holding the state’s local government election.

According to the ZINGTIE, opposition groups voiced security worries before the exercise started on Saturday morning.

In a statement released Friday evening, the Nigeria Police Force demanded that the exercise be halted, citing the likelihood of disturbance resulting from disputes between political groups.

Citing a recent court ruling that restored chairmen elected in 2022 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, also cautioned the governor against holding the election.

The governor persisted in conducting the exercise in spite of the reservations and legal counsel.

At around eight in the morning, Governor Adeleke cast his ballot at Ede North Local Government Area’s Unit 9, Ward 2.

In a post on his official Facebook page, Atiku spoke about the ongoing exercise, praising the governor and calling on the security agencies to carry out their responsibilities.

He wrote: “As residents in Osun State go out to the polls today to elect council chairpersons, I once again urge for a peaceful and hitch-free exercise.

“The local council election is the heartbeat of a democratic system, given that its outcome impacts closely on the lives of the citizens.

“I commend Governor Ademola Adeleke for going ahead with the exercise and urge security agencies and polling officials to perform their duties with the highest sense of responsibility to the public.”
