Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president, has called President Bola Tinubu’s administration hypocritical, characterizing its recently announced “Nigeria First” slogan as a phony public relations effort with no real intention to change the country.
Atiku urged President Tinubu to show genuine patriotism by swapping his official luxury car, which was manufactured abroad, for a locally made vehicle and by ensuring that all future medical care is provided in Nigerian hospitals in a forcefully worded statement released by his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu.
“We challenge President Tinubu to stop the noise and trade in his beloved Escalade for an Innoson, Nord or any made-in-Nigeria car. That single act will do more to promote local industry than a thousand policy memos,” Atiku said.
In an effort to express support for the suffering people, he also urged the president’s ministers, whom he referred to as “shameless Rolls Royce connoisseurs,” to purchase Nigerian-made automobiles.
Cars weren’t the only thing the former vice president did. He advised Tinubu to stop his “love affair with Paris and London” and take his vacations at nearby tourist destinations like Erin Ijesha Waterfalls, Yankari Game Reserve, and Obudu Cattle Ranch.
“Nigeria is beautiful — unless, of course, the President thinks otherwise,” he added.
The President’s frequent international medical excursions were also criticized by Atiku, who said they were a clear contradiction of the government’s stated demands for independence.
“We demand that President Tinubu — champion of ‘Nigeria First’ — conduct all future medical check-ups at LUTH, National Hospital Abuja, UCH Ibadan, or even the N41 billion Akwa Ibom world-class hospital in Uyo. If these hospitals are good enough for ordinary Nigerians, they should be good enough for their Commander-in-Chief. Anything less is sheer hypocrisy,” he said.
Atiku claimed the Tinubu administration had failed to inspire faith and trust by requesting sacrifices from Nigerians while splurging on overseas luxury.
“True leadership isn’t photo-ops or soundbites—it’s setting the tone by example. Nigeria deserves real commitment, not this never-ending charade,” he added.
