General Christopher Musa, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, has revealed that certain individuals in Benue State allegedly supported armed groups involved in the deadly assault on Yelwata community, which left many residents dead.

During an extended press briefing held at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, General Musa alleged that the attackers were assisted by some locals who provided them with food, shelter, and even access to women.

He further claimed that local informants played a role in directing the armed men to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Yelwata, significantly worsening the outcome of the attack.

According to the Defence Chief, although security personnel had been deployed to various locations across the state based on earlier intelligence, the attackers employed misleading tactics that caught security forces off guard.

“These criminals were harboured by people in the community, they were given food, they were even given women, they were guided on where the IDP camp was located. Yet, security forces received no information,” the CDS lamented.

Following the tragic incident, President Bola Tinubu has ordered the comprehensive mobilization of all national security units—including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, and intelligence services—to apprehend the perpetrators.

General Musa emphasized the need for active community involvement in the nation’s security architecture, stating that “Security is everyone’s responsibility.”

He also appealed to the Federal Government to urgently address the issue of poorly secured borders, pointing out that weapons and combatants are crossing into Nigeria from neighboring conflict zones like Libya, Sudan, and the Central African Republic.

The Defence Chief warned that the ongoing instability across the Sahel is increasingly affecting Nigeria through unregulated entry points.
