Baba-Ahmed reveals the real coalition needed

Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s vice presidential candidate in the general election of 2023, has declared that he opposes Atiku Abubakar’s choice of Peter Obi as his running mate in 2027.

He made the case that power should stay in the South for an additional four years following President Tinubu’s administration, citing the unwritten agreement in Nigerian presidential politics that permits the two regions—the North and South—to each serve eight years in office.

Peter Obi, who Baba-Ahmed claims won the 2023 presidential election but was cheated out, is too well-known a person to be anyone’s vice president.

The business tycoon stated in an interview with Arise News: “I think Peter Obi should not be a VP. Having gotten a disputed 10 million votes, now you’re starting to understand what I mean.”

Baba-Ahmed added that he doesn’t think the partnership is particularly noteworthy, stating that Peter Obi put up a strong fight on his own in 2023.

“It is all about a narrative that was sold out to Nigeria very quickly, that to defeat Tinubu, it has to be a coalition. Coalition is good, but when in 2023 we defeated APC, PDP, there was no coalition in the Labour Party.

“The real coalition we need is in the ballot box. Not a coalition. The real coalition is of votes at the ballot box. You protect them all the way to declaration.

“You present a coalition of politicians, you open the flanks for APC to be talking their jargon, when APC is worse than what they are saying about ADC.

“So in reality, what you need are the votes for a credible candidate with a credible ticket. There is no law, there is no principle which says that it must be a coalition.”
