Bassirou Faye sworn in as Senegal’s president

With the oath of office, Bassirou Diomaye Faye became the fifth president of Senegal.

Faye, 44, is elected as Senegal’s youngest president.

In an occasion observed by African leaders in the new town of Diamniadio, close to the capital Dakar, ZINGTIE reports that he succeeded Macky Sall on Tuesday, April 2.

“Before God and the Senegalese nation, I swear to faithfully fulfil the office of President of the Republic of Senegal,” Faye said before the gathered officials.

In addition, he pledged to protect “scrupulously observe the provisions of the Constitution and the laws” and to defend “the integrity of the territory and national independence, and to spare no effort to achieve African unity.”

There will be a formal handover of power at the presidential palace in Dakar with outgoing President Macky Sall.
