A charity 5K run will take place in Benidorm on Sunday, June 1, to support people affected by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The event, which has the slogan “The finish line: extinguishing ALS,” will follow a five-kilometre urban route and feature a children’s race. All proceeds will go to ADELA CV, an association dedicated to supporting people with ALS.

“This isn’t just about sport; it’s about solidarity,” said Javier Jordá, Benidorm’s councillor for sport. Organisers are expecting a high turnout, with around 400 people already registered for the race and walk.

The initiative was inspired by the personal story of Benidorm firefighter Paco Pedrera, whose wife was diagnosed with ALS, a neurodegenerative disease with no cure. “That’s why we’re having to organise events like this to raise funds,” Pedrera said, criticising the central government for delays in implementing the ‘ELA Law’.

The event has the backing of former footballer Juan Carlos Unzué, who has recorded a video message in support of the cause. Spanish 10K champion Miguel Baidal will also participate

“We’re on track to reach 1,000 participants and raise nearly €20,000—a fantastic result, especially for a first-time edition,” said race organiser Pepe Brotons. Registrations are open online until May 29, with on-site registration possible on the day of the event.

The event aims to raise awareness and funds for ALS research, which affects around 4,000 people in Spain. José Cerdá, vice president of the ‘Solidarios’ association, said the group would be making a financial contribution and helping to raise awareness about the condition.

“Come along on Sunday, June 1, to enjoy a great day out while contributing to the fight against this disease,” Pedrera encouraged participants
