A Catholic priest from the Diocese of Katsina-Ala in Benue State, Rev. Fr. Benjamin Versue, has expressed deep sorrow over the destruction of the rectory at St. Paul’s Parish in Ayetwar, which he said was burned down on Monday night by individuals suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.
Sharing his grief in a Facebook post, the priest described how the attackers shattered the church’s windows before launching a violent assault on the community, causing many residents to abandon their homes in fear.
Fr. Versue criticized the Nigerian Army, accusing them of stripping local residents of their means of protection, a move he believes exposed them to the heavily armed attackers.
He also claimed the assailants operated with advanced support, saying they were “equipped with logistics and high-level intelligence provided by military personnel,” which allowed them to carry out deadly attacks on defenseless villagers while they slept.
Benue State has remained a hotspot for repeated attacks linked to armed herdsmen, with rural settlements often left devastated.
Fr. Versue said: “St. Paul’s Parish Ayetwar rectory, which I sacrificed everything to build, was set ablaze by Fulani Jihadist yesterday.”
“The Church window glasses were broken and the people successfully sacked from their ancestry homes.
“Kudos to the Nigerian army for successfully disarming the people and making them vulnerable to their attackers.
“So interesting to see Nigeria, the so-called giant of Africa with a dwarf military. No wonder,
“The cries of the people echo through the land… blood flowing like a river. Justice, integrity, dignity, humanity, lost in the fray; a nation’s future uncertain each passing day.”
The number of casualties from the attack has not yet been independently confirmed.
At the time of filing this report, military authorities has not issued an official response to the allegations.
