The leadership of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), under Uchenna Madu, has called on the Nigerian government, led by President Bola Tinubu, to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), along with other detained Biafra supporters across the nation.

This appeal was made in a statement released on Tuesday by Edeson Samuel, the group’s National Director of Information.

MASSOB also criticized the exclusion of the South-east region from the Nigeria Student Loan scheme. The group further accused the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) of deliberately undermining the consistently strong academic performance of students from the South-east.

They pointed out the continued lack of a functional seaport in the South-east and the absence of individuals from the region among the top leadership of key federal institutions such as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), and the Nigeria Customs Service.

In addition, MASSOB expressed concern over the ongoing shutdown of the Enugu international airport and the suspension of railway services in the South-east.

This statement comes as preparations are underway for the 2025 Biafra Anniversary, scheduled for May 30.

“May 30th, 2025 is a national day of introspection and self examination for the people of Biafra after 58 years of our forceful and deceitful actions of General Gowon popularly known as reintegration, reconciliation and rehabilitation back to Nigeria.”

Earlier in the month, MASSOB had announced that all schools, markets, and both public and private transport terminals in the South-east would be closed on May 30, 2025.
