Seven people were murdered by unknown gunmen on Saturday night in the Umucheke Okwe independent community in the Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State.

According to information obtained by ZINGTIE, the assailants opened fire, murdering six village leaders as well as the community’s president general.

According to a community member who wishes to remain anonymous, the victims were attending a weekly meeting when the shooters opened fire.

“Gunmen have just shot dead the President General of Umucheke Okwe and six village heads,” the source said.

The gathering was being conducted inside the President General’s shop in the community market when the attack occurred.

The source further revealed, “Upon their arrival, the gunmen unleashed gunfire, killing all the community leaders before setting the place ablaze. All the community chiefs perished in the assault.”

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, as the source noted, “Nobody understands the reason for the assault. No one knows the purpose of the meeting.”

The people have fled their homes in fear, leaving the settlement abandoned.

Since his phone was turned off permanently at the time of filing this report, ASP Henry Okoye, the public relations officer for the Imo State Police Command, has not yet responded to ZINGTIE’s inquiry about the incident.
