In the Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State, fighting has resumed between Jama’tu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS), also referred to as Boko Haram, and its breakaway faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), two weeks after a failed attempt at reconciliation.
There have previously been violent clashes between ISWAP and the Bakura Doro-led faction of Boko Haram in the island parts of the Lake Chad Basin.
Zagazola Makama, a counterinsurgency expert, claims that the most recent conflict took place on February 14 close to the ISWAP camps at Toumbun Ali and Toumbun Gini.
Makama stated in a post on X that ISWAP sustained heavy losses in the combat, which was fought on the water.
He cautioned that the fighting would intensify and reach Kukawa LGA, where Boko Haram continues its campaign against ISWAP.
Since ISWAP broke away from Boko Haram in 2016 and swore loyalty to the Islamic State, the two groups have been engaged in a bloody conflict.
