A dramatic incident occurred on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, when an 18-seater commercial bus carrying students of the Kwara State University, Malete, caught fire while in motion along Shao Road near Sobi Army Barracks. The students were traveling from Ilorin to attend lectures at Malete when the bus suddenly engulfed in flames.

Fortunately, the Kwara State Fire Service responded promptly to the distress call and extinguished the fire, saving the lives of all 18 students on board. The bus, with registration number XUF 134 ZD, was completely burnt to ashes.

According to Hassan Adekunle, Head of Media and Publicity of the Kwara State Fire Service, “The fire crew responded swiftly and successfully extinguished the fire.” Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire originated from a spark in the engine compartment.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince John Famuyiwa, extended his sympathy to the bus owner and advised all road users to carry out routine vehicle checks before embarking on any journey.
