Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari’s widow, Aisha Buhari, has openly denied rumors that she was no longer his spouse prior to his death.
Days after Nigerian scholar Farooq Kperogi, who is living in the United States, said that Aisha had abandoned the Buhari surname and returned to her given name, Halilu, this correction was made.
In response to the allegation, Aisha maintained that her marriage lasted till her husband’s death through her former assistant, Alhaji Sani Zorro. Zorro denied the claims, saying that there was never any doubt about the First Lady’s marital status.
On Sunday, July 20, Kperogi, who made the initial Facebook claim, formally apologized, calling the post one of his “worst and cruelest lapses of judgment” in his life. He acknowledged that the information was never meant for general consumption, even though his source was trustworthy.
“I absolutely should have foreseen the profoundly painful consequences… I am truly sorry,” he wrote, acknowledging Aisha’s right to define the truth about her own marriage.
Widespread internet reactions to the incident have sparked discussions about privacy, journalistic accountability, and the legacy of the late President Buhari, who died in the UK in 2024 after a protracted illness.
