Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Senate, has formally petitioned IGP Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police, to look into a suspected assassination plan against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
According to Naija News, the April 3, 2025, appeal follows Akpoti-Uduaghan’s April 1, 2025, public outburst in which she claimed Akpabio had given former Kogi State Governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello instructions to kill her in Kogi State. The conspiracy, she said, was intended to give the impression that her death was caused by her constituents.
Akpabio strongly refuted the charge in his appeal, describing it as a “heinous lie” and a “reckless and deliberate attempt” to damage his character. He insisted that Akpoti-Uduaghan be charged with criminal defamation.
The Senate President described the accusation as politically motivated, saying Akpoti-Uduaghan was trying to harm his reputation and stir up political turmoil. He also underlined that there was no proof to back up the accusation.
Akpabio went on to emphasize the damaging effects of the untrue accusation, pointing out that it had received extensive publicity on radio, television, and social media. He called on law enforcement to handle the situation with the gravity it demands.
“I write to formally bring to your attention and seek immediate investigation and prosecution of a criminally defamatory and malicious statement made against me by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, a suspended member of the Nigerian Senate on the 1st of April, 2025 and which was widely publicised on radio stations, televisions and newspapers, including the social media,” Akpabio stated in his petition.
He continued, “In the public outburst at Kogi State while addressing her audience, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan falsely alleged that I instructed the former Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, to ‘assassinate her in Kogi State instead of Abuja’ with the intent of making it appear that her constituents were responsible for her death.”
Akpabio categorically rejected the accusation, calling it “a reckless and deliberate attempt to damage my reputation, endanger my life and security, and incite political unrest.”
He also voiced concern about the political motivations underlying the untrue statements. “Her motive was clear, which was to incite the public, manipulate sentiments, and malign my person and office in the eyes of the Nigerian people and the international community,” he added.
Akpabio called for the “immediate investigation into the false and inciting allegation” and Akpoti-Uduaghan’s prosecution under the applicable statutes for criminal defamation, false accusation, incitement, and conduct likely to create a breach of peace as he wrapped up his appeal.
