On December 18, 2024, tension broke out in Abuja when development control personnel dispatched to remove unlawful structures in the Sabon Lugbe district battled with soldiers who were apparently acting on orders from a senior officer. Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has given the order to carry out the destruction.
According to reports, a Major General owns the targeted property, which is situated on Plot 416. Soldiers in a car with hidden license plates confronted officials who had come to take down a fence. In addition to threatening that “someone would die today,” the soldiers barricaded the exit, preventing the officials from departing.
Gunshots were reportedly fired during the altercation as the soldiers tried to threaten the demolition team.
Witnesses said that when one of the soldiers, Private Jamilu, approached the caterpillar operator and aimed his rifle at him, demanding that he cease his job, the scene became more heated. After complying, the operator was physically assaulted by the soldiers, who also tore his clothes. After that, Private Jamilu phoned for reinforcements and blasted out the caterpillar’s tires.
The enforcement team was taken captive by the Major General, who also arrived with more troops and further damaged the vehicles by deflating their tires. According to reports, three Hilux cars were driven to the Major General’s home, and a number of law enforcement officers were held for several hours.
The Major General refused to participate, and the matter remained unresolved even after the DPO Trademore arrived. The DPO the scene, stating that she would return later.
In addition to sparking public discussion about the growing tensions between government officials and military personnel in Abuja, the incident has prompted questions about the role of military forces in civil matters.
