Professor Chris Piwuna has been elected as the new president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). He succeeds Professor Victor Osodeke, a soil science expert from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.

Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital (JUTH) and current Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, Plateau State, won the election, which was held during the 23rd National Delegates Congress of the Union in Benin City, Edo State. He contested the position alongside Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi
The new president assumes office at a critical time, with potential industrial action looming due to unresolved issues in Nigeria’s university system. These issues include the sharing formula of the recently released earned academic allowances by the federal government and persistent brain drain.
