Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed has reiterated his loyalty to the Labour Party (LP) ahead of the 2027 general elections, stating he will remain loyal to the platform that produced him as vice-presidential candidate in 2023.

Baba-Ahmed, 56, was Peter Obi’s running partner in the previous presidential election, which the LP candidate lost to Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Obi left the Labour Party around two years after the election and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which is currently the foundation of a coalition aiming to confront the ruling APC.

However, during a press event at the Labour Party’s national secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday, Baba-Ahmed stated unequivocally that he will not join Obi in the ADC.

The former lawmaker who represented Kaduna North has stated that he is prepared to volunteer himself for national service before 2027, with an emphasis on contributing to Nigeria’s recovery and growth.

He also stated that he does not trust the ADC, characterizing those behind the coalition as “disgruntled politicians.”

Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has formally stated his interest in running for president in the 2027 general elections.

Baba-Ahmed made the announcement during a rally at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

The declaration statement comes only one week after Obi declared his defection from the Labour Party (LP) for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking to party members and supporters, Baba-Ahmed stated that his presidential desire was not reactionary or dependent on Obi’s political moves, and that it predated the 2023 elections.

“I have made myself available to contest for the office in 2027. I’m not following anybody’s trajectory or stepping into anybody’s shoes.

“Can I please remind you that before His Excellency Governor Peter Obi filed for the presidency, I aspired for the presidency before him? The records are there for you to see,” he said.
