On Friday, the Federal High Court in Abuja found Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central and is currently under suspension, guilty of contempt of court.
Justice Binta Nyako, who delivered the ruling, stated that the senator violated a court directive by posting a sarcastic apology directed at the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on her Facebook page.
The judge said the apology, shared on April 7, ridiculed a previous order that restrained both parties from making public comments on the case.
As a result, the court directed Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to issue a formal apology in two national newspapers and on her Facebook page within a week.
Additionally, she was fined N5 million, with the court emphasizing that the contempt occurred in a civil context.
Although the contempt proceedings were initiated by Senator Akpabio, the court declined to make any ruling in his favor.
At the same time, the court continued with its judgment on the legal challenge Akpoti-Uduaghan filed against the Senate’s decision to suspend her for six months.
