Justice Binta Fatima Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday declared the suspension of Kogi State Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, as invalid.

She ordered the Senate to reinstate the senator, stating that the six-month suspension breached constitutional provisions and left her constituents without proper representation.

The ruling came in response to a legal action filed by Akpoti-Uduaghan, who had contested the Senate’s decision to suspend her for half a year.

According to the judge, although the National Assembly holds the authority to take disciplinary action against its members, such measures must not be so severe that they effectively silence the voice of a constituency.

She added that the six-month suspension was disproportionate, noting that it surpassed the maximum 180 legislative days the chamber is allowed to convene annually.

However, the court found Akpoti-Uduaghan in contempt and imposed a fine of N5 million.

She is also required to publish a public apology in two national newspapers and on her Facebook page.
