The Dangote oil refinery has started exporting Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to other countries, marking a significant milestone for Nigeria’s refining industry. According to Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, the refinery exported up to 1 million tonnes of petrol between June and July 2025.

“Today, Nigeria has actually become a net exporter of refined products. Before I came on the podium, I asked my people how many tonnes of PMS we have actually exported. From June beginning to date, we have exported about 1 million tonnes of PMS, within the last 50 days,” Dangote said at the Global Commodity Insights Conference on West African Refined Fuel Markets

The development comes amid claims that the refinery was struggling to meet local petrol demands. However, Dangote’s statement suggests that the refinery is not only meeting local demands but also producing surplus petrol for export.

In addition to petrol exports, Dangote announced that the company has started exporting aviation fuel to Europe and Saudi Arabia. The Dangote Group is also targeting $500 million worth of cement exports by 2027, with similar growth expected in the petroleum refining sector.
