In Oyo State, a 52-year-old man named Akeem Rasheed got into problems after visiting a grave and exhuming the body for ceremonial reasons.
According to ZINGTIE, Rasheed, the suspect, has been taken into custody and accused with unlawfully possessing a human skull in violation of the state’s criminal laws before the Iyaganku Chief Magistrate Court in Ibadan.
The event took place in Jegede Estate in the Odeyale neighbourhood of Ibadan, Oyo State, at one in the morning.
The defendant, who lives in Ibadan’s Jegede neighbourhood, was accused of unlawfully possessing a human skull and improperly interfering with a deceased person’s body.
However, the defendant entered a not guilty plea to the allegations brought against him.
Cpl. David Adepoju, the prosecution, had already informed the court that on October 11, by 1am Rasheed unlawfully tampered with a deceased person’s body at Jegede Estate in the Odeyale area of Ibadan.
According to him, the defendant reportedly dug up a body from its grave, took out the skull, and set it on fire.
The defendant allegedly burned the human skull to ashes for religious reasons, according to the prosecutor. According to him, the offences violated Sections 242 (1) (b) and 352(A) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Oyo State, 2000, which carry a maximum sentence of several years in jail.
Olabisi Ogunkanmi, the presiding chief magistrate, granted the defendant bail of ₦250,000 with two sureties in an equivalent amount. According to Ogunkanmi, one of the sureties needs to be the defendant’s blood related and provide proof of their income.
The defendant was remanded in custody at the correctional facility until he perfected his bail conditions, and the case was postponed until May 5, 2025, for a hearing.
